How I Became Location Independent

How I Became Location Independent

By Lauren Brands on April 6, 2021

This last year I officially became location independent through starting my own business where I work virtually and from anywhere that has a wifi signal!

Ok, so maybe I need to start from the very beginning to really share the story. I originally started as a nanny… yes, I was a college graduate at a point in my life where I couldn’t tell you what I really wanted to do, but knew I needed to make some moolah. My mom so graciously offered for me to move home for a few months to figure it out and save money by not paying rent.

At the time, I honestly used to know absolutely nothing about VAs or OBMs, in fact, I probably couldn't have told you what they stood for at the time. I was just a nanny living at home with my parents to save money and trying to figure out what I could possibly be good enough at and like enough to start a new career in.

I happened to get an email from some of my favorite Youtubers who had friends launching a Side Hustle Challenge. It was less than $20 and a week of content. I had always loved the idea of starting a side hustle, but was clueless where to start and a $20 investment seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn. That week I learned more than I felt like I had learned all 4 years of undergrad and fell in love with the community of people in the challenge.

The business that ran the challenge was a company called Location Indie and they were focused on helping people reach the triangle of freedom (location independence, time independence and financial independence). They have an active community that I am now a part of (and have made so many incredible friends from) as well as a program to launch into the new lifestyle that you want to live. Through participating in the program, I was able to dive deep into what life I wanted to live (they why behind any job we do), who I wanted to serve and work with and how to do it all in a way that worked for the lifestyle I wanted.

From there I gained mentors and encouragers who helped me realize that if I started my own business as a virtual assistant (VA) that I would be able to start inching my way towards the triangle of freedom. I started my business back in October of 2020 and ended my job nannying right before the beginning of 2021. I have been working on my business full time since then and am officially location independent and loving it!
